Creativity and knowledge blossom with the use of
flower activities for kindergartners. The theme lends itself well to activities
in all areas of the curriculum, from math to art class. Many flower activities
also work well for kindergarten learning centers which give the kids a chance to
explore the topic on their own. Adding flower images on bulletin boards and
other areas of the room dresses it up and incorporates the theme to accompany
the flower activities. Hand Flowers *
Hand flowers make an
attractive display and capture the hand prints of the kindergarten students,
making them a keepsake for the parents. Each child traces and cuts out several
hand prints on colorful construction paper. A paper plate serves as the base of
the flower with the hand prints glued to cover it completely. The fingers of
each hand print should point out toward the edge of the paper plate to create
the petals. You want the outer layer of hand prints to hang off the edge of the
plate so the plate itself isn't visible from the front. Growing
Flowers *
A planting project integrates the theme with the science
curriculum. Growing flowers from seeds allows the kindergarten students to watch
the process. Have the students draw pictures in a journal to document the growth
of the flowers. Another option is to photograph the flowers at various stages of
growth to use in a classroom book. This project works well in spring because the
students can take home the grown flowers as a special Mother's Day
gift. Flower Pressing *
Pressing flowers incorporates nature and
art. Fresh flowers go between sheets of paper in a large book with at least an
eighth of an inch of pages between them. Extra books on top of the one holding
the flowers adds weight for a better press. This method takes a few weeks to
finish the pressing. You can also place the books and flowers in the microwave
to speed up the process. You'll want to microwave them in short time periods of
only about 30 seconds at a time. Check the flowers each time. When placing the
flowers in the book, lay them flat as you want them to look when they're done.
Leave space between each flower so they don't overlap. The pressed flowers make
pretty accents to bulletin boards and art projects for the kindergarten
students. Flower Seed Art *
Leftover flower seeds from a planting
project double as an art supply. The kids draw pictures with glue. The seeds are
sprinkled on top of the wet glue. Shake off any excess seeds. The resulting
artwork takes on a mosaic appearance. You can also add flower petals, pressed
flowers or other natural items to add more interest to the flower artwork.
